Begoma is cutting CO2 emissions from road transport in half – by 2030
Emissions from Begoma’s fossil road transports will be halved by 2030. That is our goal – and our mission. With our new sustainability strategy in place, we are taking several important steps to lower our and our customers’ climate footprint. This is how we will achieve it.
The global transportation sector is a big contributor to CO2 emissions worldwide. We have a responsibility to improve and adapt, to make transportation solutions more sustainable.
This year, Begoma has adopted its first sustainability strategy. A big part of it covers our climate footprint, but we also have policies and action plans in place for sustainable practices covering how we conduct business, technical innovation and social sustainability as well.
– With this strategy, we now have ambitious goals for 2030. By then, the CO2 emissions from our road transports will be cut in half, says the Managing Director, Henrik Malmberg.
For years now, Begoma has collected detailed climate data from all our transports. Each month all our customers are presented with their climate impact from our transport for that month, for no additional cost. This data is the foundation for our calculations going forward.
– We’re not guessing in the dark, our sustainability strategy is based on hard facts. We know exactly how much each of our transports and different modes of transport affects the climate. This is also why we are confident in achieving our goals, when we now adapt to a different way, says Henrik Malmberg.
The way forward
The way forward will be taken in several steps. From reviewing and improving existing customer transports in regard to climate emissions (for example switching to rail or intermodal where possible) – to improving loading efficiency even further.
We are also shifting the composition of our transport modes. With fossil road transport having dominated, not only our company but the transport industry as a whole, we will shift to increasing transports made from other modes of transport.
By 2030, we aim that out of all our transports, 10 percent each should be from road transport with biofuel, electric road transport and rail transport. An added 15 percent should be from intermodal and another 5 percent should be from sea transport.
This will take the amount of fossil road transports down to 50 percent – a stark contrast to today’s 99 percent.
– We are embarking on an exciting journey, going forward. And we welcome all our customers to get involved; this journey relies on cooperation. We alone cannot make this happen, but together we can cut the emissions significantly, says Henrik Malmberg.
