When Europe goes on holiday

Every summer, Europe’s roads fill up. Not with freight, but with families heading to campsites, coastal towns and mountain resorts. It is one of the most predictable events of the year. And yet, for anyone moving goods across the continent, it brings a set of challenges that are easy to underestimate.

Several European countries impose special driving restrictions for heavy vehicles during the summer months. The reasons are straightforward: more passenger traffic, higher road safety risks and a need to keep major routes from grinding to a halt. For freight, the result is a shorter operational window and less available capacity.

What the restrictions look like in practice

The rules vary by country, but some of the most significant apply to the routes that matter most for European freight.

In Germany, one of Europe’s main transit corridors, an additional Saturday ban applies on heavily used motorways between July and August. Trucks above 7.5 tonnes are prohibited from driving on key routes between 07:00 and 20:00 on Saturdays during this period. Combined with the year-round Sunday ban, this leaves a narrower window for planning cross-border shipments.

Austria tightens its restrictions during summer as well, particularly on the Brenner and Inn Valley routes into Italy. France, Italy and Croatia all have their own seasonal rules that extend or replace standard weekend bans during the summer months.

What this means for your transport

Fewer available driving hours means less capacity on the market. When capacity tightens, lead times stretch and costs tend to follow. For companies that have not planned ahead, the summer months can mean delays that are difficult to recover from.

The practical response is early planning. Booking capacity before the peak period, considering alternative routes or departure times, and knowing when rail or sea freight might be a better option are all part of navigating the summer effectively.
